Garden Addition

Long Island, NY

Service wing addition to existing Victorian house.

The project presented the challenge of extending a fine Victorian house in a manner that can preserve and enhance it's distinctive characther, while affording modern living.

The new addition stands as an engaged 'pavillion' to the rear of the existing house. The formal elegance and sophistication of the old house has informed the scale, proportions, materials and details of the new work. While providing new service and utility rooms, the heart of the new work is an elegantly scaled 'Grandma's KItchen'; a large light filled room where the family can cook and entertain informally. A south facing projecting bay can be opened to receive cool breezes.

A wide plank oak floor connects the new work to the old, while simple painted panelling and beaded wainscots interpret the Victorian cadences of the existing rooms.
