Oceanfront Estate

Nantucket, MA

A summer vacation home and outbuildings nestled on an elevated spit between the Atlantic Ocean and a large inland pond. The program included Main House, Guest Houses, Green house, Garages, Woodshop, Boat house, Boat docks and an enclosed ocean viewing deck.

The Main House has been articulated as a series of shingled 'cottages', radiating outward from a central Great Room. This 'village' layout captures both seaward and inland views while creating sheltered outdoor spaces between. Outdoor porches offer varied outdoor living opportunities for different weather conditions or functions.

At the center of the Main House stands a soaring Great Room with an imposing exposed timber roof structure. This social heart provides ample living space, organizing adjoining spaces for Cooking, Dining and Recreation. The surrounding private wings, radiate outward, afford privacy to owners and guests alike. The exposed roof structure of the great room is echoed throughout, but at a more intimate scale. Intermediary spaces offer changing framed vistas across, either the sweeping dunes or, the leeward gardens.

The island cottage metaphor has been extended to the ancillary structures.

Interior detailing interprets 'Arts and Crafts' concepts. Interior materils include Ash floors; Teak doors, cabinetwork and panelling; Aspen walls and ceilings; reused brick and weathered bronze hardware. The exterior is finished in weathered white cedar shingles with natural teak windows, doors and millwork.
